Thoughts to Ponder
"A whole lot of us go through life assuming that we are basically right, basically all the time, about basically everything: about our political and intellectual convictions, our religious and moral beliefs, our assessment of other people, our memories, our grasp of facts. As absurd as it sounds when we stop and think about it, our steady state seems to be one of unconsciously assuming that we are very close to omniscient." – Kathryn Shulz, Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error (Ecco, 2010)

Claremont & Hecla UMC are accepting donations of mittens, hats, gloves and scarves during this season of Advent. Please bring your donations and place them on the tree at the entrance to fellowship hall in Claremont or under the tree in Hecla. Thoughts to Ponder
The world is the place where we meet God because it is the place where God meets us in the person of Jesus Christ. Christ did not merely inhabit human flesh; he became flesh. He made himself, as God, to be one with humanity in the concrete, historical realities of human life. Truly, God has entered into the world and it is in the world that Christians must turn to find God.
From “Merton’s Palace of Nowhere” by James Finley

Thoughts to Ponder
The world’s idea of joy is to have one’s fancy tickled, to be amused, to be made happy and merry whatever it takes. As long as people get their way, as long as things are rosy, then the world the world thinks there is cause for joy. In fact, from the opening chapters to the end of the Bible we find the opposite is true. When people get their way, when one’s sinful self directs life and actions to pursue joy and self satisfaction, misery and sorrow often follow. Sin and living in a sinful world interferes and hinders the joy God gives us to experience in our lives.

Thoughts to Ponder
“As an  act of love, prayer is a courageous act. It is a risk we take. It is a life and death risk, believing in the promises of the gospel, that God’s love is indeed operative n the world. In prayer we have the courage, perhaps even the presumption and the arrogance or the audacity to claim that God’s love can be operative in the very specific situations of human need that we encounter.”
From “Healing of Purpose” by John E. Biersdorf

Thoughts to Ponder
The notion of growing in faith is central to the Christian faith. Faith is not static but dynamic. It requires cultivation. Founder of Methodism, John Wesley, was as passionate about Christians maturing toward the fullness of faith as he was about inviting Christians into the beginnings of faith. He called early Methodists to practices that fostered faith through learning in community, which results in the steady withering of the old nature while nurturing the fruit of the Spirit. This steady maturing, full of setbacks, distractions, and missteps for sure, is the perfecting of the soul in love, growing in the image of God, fostering of an inner holiness. The end toward which we strive is having the same mind in us that is in Christ Jesus.

The 4th Annual Fall Middle School Retreat is scheduled for October 29-30th at Rose Hill E. Free Church. It begins at and will be done at approximately on Saturday. The cost is $6. Thank you to everyone who donated food, give a way items, served, helped plan and/or participated in any way for the Hunter’s Breakfast. Your efforts helped to make this event a success.

The youth are currently doing a fundraiser for a mission trip next summer. They are selling greenery that will be delivered the week of Thanksgiving. Please consider how you can help the youth  raise funds to go and be the hands and feet of Jesus.

October 31st is the last Fifth Sunday of the year. For this special Sunday we are asking for donations of underwear and socks to be sent to the Tree of Life. All sizes are needed and for both genders. If you are unable to buy the items, cash donations will be accepted and forwarded to the Tree of Life. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Thoughts to Ponder
God uses worship to: transform lives, heal wounded souls, renew hope, shape decisions, provoke change, inspire compassion, bind people to one another. Through Passionate worship, God draws people to Christ, deepens understanding and relationship with Christ, and over time transforms lives as disciples grow in the image of Christ. Passionate Worship is alive, authentic, fresh and engaging.

Thoughts to Ponder
True freedom, as true love, rids us of fear. In the economics of the kingdom, faith is sufficient. Faith the size of a mustard seed. The faith that “is confident assurance concerning things we hope for and convictions about things we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1)
